Optimizing treatment of bipolar disorder with comorbid alcoholism and other addictions
Bipolar disorder has the highest prevalence of co-occurring alcoholism and other drug dependence and is associated with significant negative impacts on treatment adherence, treatment response, and course of illness. Treatment needs for this population is still largely unmet. The goal of this presentation is to review the most promising evidence-based pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for this population. This includes review of results of published, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies employing anticonvulsants, atypical antipsychotics, and anti-craving medications conducted in this population. It will also include review of novel psychotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of bipolar disorder complicated by alcoholism and other addictions. Implications for treatment implementation and for future research on emerging treatment strategies will also be discussed.
