Rescuing childhood: understanding bipolar disorders in children and adolescents
Objective: “Rescuing Childhood” is an educational DVD whose goal is to increase the awareness and understanding of pediatric bipolar by professionals and families that come in contact with youngsters that struggle with this illness. This hour long video is a compilation of interviews of specialists from diverse backgrounds that work with bipolar children and their families. This group is composed of several child psychiatrists with expertise in this area: Boris Birmaher, MD, Gabriele Carlson, MD, Kiki Chang, MD, Rosalie Greenberg, MD, Robert Kowatch, MD, Ellen Leibenluft, MD and Janet Wozniak, MD. Additional participants include Dr. Jean Haymond, a pediatrician and Dr. Regina Peter, co-director of Newmark School – a special education school in New Jersey, which has many bipolar pupils in attendance. Direct conversations with bipolar children and their families about the disorder are included and help round out this film. The film addresses issues such as: the controversy over the bipolar diagnosis and clinical presentation in childhood; why does it seem like there are more kids being diagnosed as bipolar today than in the past?; differences in childhood and adult onset bipolar disorder; potential etiologies, comorbidities, role of the pediatrician, importance of early intervention; approach to treatment including addressing psychotherapy, psychopharmacologic interventions and meeting the child’s educational needs.
