Dr Fisun Akdeniz

Dr Fisun Akdeniz

Dr. Akdeniz received a M.D. from Ege University in 1990. She attended residency trainig in internal medicine for nine months, then completed residency training in psychiatry at Ege University Hospital in 1996. After serving as a psychiatrist in the outpatient unit at Ege University for 3 years, she went to NIMH, USA to work with Dr. Ellen Leibenluft for six months in 1999. She got the masters of science degree on affective neuroscience from Maastrich University, Holland in 2003. She became an associate professor of psychiatry at Ege University in 2004.

The focus of her work is rapid cycling bipolar disorder, special issues in women with bipolar disorder, course and treatment of mood disorders during pregnancy and postpartum period, and adverse events of psychotropic drugs on reproductive and metabolic systems.

Dr Jose Bitran

Dr. Bitran he is the Chairman of the Neuropsychiatric Institute of Chile, where for 15 years he has lead a large Mood Disorders Program. He is an expert in the Depressive Illnesses and a national authority in the diagnosis and treatment of Bipolar Disorders.
Dr. Bitran received his medical degree from University of Chile. He trained in psychiatry at the UCLA/Neuropsychiatric Institute (Los Angeles, CA. USA) where he specialized in academic psychiatry and Bipolar Disorders. He was Visiting Fellow and Visiting Associate at the National Institute of Mental Health (USA), investigating in pre-clinical and clinical Psychopharmacology. His research contributed with early insights on the molecular mechanisms of actions of mood stabilizers and antidepressants. He was in the Faculty of the Catholic University until he founded the Neuropsychiatric Institute of Chile. He has lectured extensively in national and international symposia and workshops on different clinical and neurobiological aspects of Bipolarity.
He is a well known communicator and clinical supervisor and also a clinical psychiatrist in private practice in Santiago.

Dr Helena Maria Calil

Dr Helena Maria Calil

Prof Dr. Calil completed her medical training and obtained a PhD in Psychopharmacology in São Paulo, Brazil. Further research training was accomplished at Stanford University (research fellow) and the National Institute of Mental Health - NIMH (visiting fellow) from 1976 to 1980. Subsequently, she was a visiting scientist at the Clinical Psychobiology Branch, NIMH and got a title of "Private Docent" in Clinical Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry, University Federal of São Paulo(UNIFESP).

Prof Dr Calil is presently Professor of Psychopharmacology(since1999), Deptarment of Psychobiology,Federal University of Sao Paulo,Brazil. Her major areas of research interest are the clinical psychobiology of mood disorders, biological rhythms, and the clinical psychopharmacology in psychiatry. She has authored over 100 publications - scientific papers and book chapters - mostly in international journals.In addition, she is Vice President of the Brazilian Association of Family, Friends and People with Affective Illness (ABRATA), Vice President of Association fund of Incentive to Psychopharmacology, and member of the Scientific Council, Fênix-Association Pro-mental Health as a volunteer.

She has also been a member of several scientific organizations, and has served in committees of the Colegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum (CINP) and the Brazilian Psychiatric Association:member of Editorial Boards of several journals (exs.: The Int. J. Neuropsychopharmacology; Arch. Women´s Mental Health; Arch. Med. Res.), and was also Editor-in-Chief , Journal of the Brazilian Psychiatric Association and Latin American Psychiatric Association (1984-1998), now called Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria. Lastly, she is Past President of the following: Latin American College of Neuropsychopharmacology: Department of Psychiatry, São Paulo Medical Association; and ABRATA.

Dr Manuel Sanchez de Carmona

Dr Manuel Sanchez de Carmona

Dr. Sánchez de Carmona earned his Medical Degree from the School of Medicine of the Anáhuac University in Mexico City. Received his psychiatric education at the National Psychiatric Institute Ramón de la Fuente in Mexico City and from the Autonomous National University of Mexico. He completed his training with studies at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami, and at the New York Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University, USA.

At the present time Dr. Sánchez de Carmona is President of the ISBD Mexican Chapter, and ISBD Board Councilor. He works as a private practice physician in Mexico City.

Dr Ellen Frank

Dr Ellen Frank

Ellen Frank is Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and director of the Depression and Manic Depression Prevention program at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Dr. Frank and her colleagues developed interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) for the treatment of bipolar disorder and now have demonstrated the efficacy of this approach in several clinical trials.

An expert in mood disorders and their treatment, Dr. Frank has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers in this area and currently serves on the Mood Disorders Workgroup of the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on DSM-V.

Dr Benicio Frey

Dr Benicio Frey

Dr. Frey is Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University and is an attending psychiatrist at the Mood Disorders Inpatient Program and the Women's Health Concerns Clinic, St. Josephs Healthcare. He completed his M.D. and specialization in Psychiatry at the Federal Medical School of Porto Alegre, Brazil, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Dr. Frey completed a Research Fellowship at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (Texas), working with brain imaging in bipolar disorder patients. Subsequently, Dr. Frey did a Postdoctoral Fellowship in brain imaging at the Montreal Neurological Institute (McGill University), where he conducted a PET imaging study correlating serotonin synthesis and 5HT1A receptor binding in the human brain. In 2008, Dr. Frey received a CIHR postdoctoral fellowship award to study brain imaging in perimenopausal women with depression, under supervision of Dr. Claudio Soares and Dr. Meir Steiner at the Women's Health Concerns Clinic, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Currently, Dr. Frey holds a fellowship award from Father O'Sullivan Research Centre (SJHH).

Prof Valentim Gentil

Prof Valentim Gentil

Dr. Gentil, born in 1946, completed his medical studies and residency in Psychiatry at the Department and Institute of Psychiatry in São Paulo. Then he was a Clinical Assistant at The Maudsley Hospital and a post-graduate student at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychopharmacology. Back in Brazil, Dr. Gentil was assistant and then associate professor in the Departments of Pharmacology (until 1987) and Psychiatry (1986-1994) of the University of São Paulo Medical School (USP). Since 1994 he is Full Professor of Psychiatry in the same Department. He was elected Head of the Department of Psychiatry in 1992-96, and again from 2008-current. Between 1994 and August 2006 he was Chairman of Board of the Institute of the Psychiatry, a 120 bed academic psychiatric facility within the 2,000 bed medical centre of the USP Medical School. His teaching, clinical and research activities include work in the areas of diagnosis, treatment and psychophysiology of mood and affective disorders. His current projects include a collaborative investigation of the mechanisms of emotional regulation under antidepressants, the development of efficient programs for bipolar disorder prevention, and the development of cost-effective Mental Health public policies. He has published over 80 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, among many other publications.

A/Prof Kyooseob Ha

Kyooseob Ha is professor of psychiatry, and director of the Mood Disorders Clinic and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory of the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Korea.

Professor Ha established the Bipolar Disorders Clinic in 1998, and his clinic is one of the most active clinical service and research programs for bipolar disorders in Korea and East Asia.

His major interests include phenomenology and course, cognition and neuroimaging studies of bipolar disorders, with a special focus on bipolar depression and bipolar II disorder. He is currently leading the Bipolar Research Network of Korea and vice-chairman of Asian Network of Bipolar Disorder.

Dr David Kupfer

David J. Kupfer, M.D., Thomas Detre Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has focused his research primarily on long-term treatment strategies for recurrent mood disorders, the pathogenesis of depression and the relationship between biomarkers and depression. He has been a member of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh since 1973. From 1983 to 2009, Dr. Kupfer served as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and the Director of Research. A prolific writer, Dr. Kupfer has authored or co-authored more than 973 articles, books and book chapters and has been the recipient of numerous research awards. He currently chairs the American Psychiatric Association Task Force for DSM-V.

Dr Roger McIntyre

Dr Roger McIntyre

Dr. Roger McIntyre is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology at the University of Toronto and Head of the Mood Disorders Psychopharmacology Unit at the University Health Network, Toronto, Canada.

Dr. McIntyre is involved in multiple research endeavours which primarily aim to characterize the association between mood disorders and medical comorbidity. This research involves elucidating metabolic adverse events associated with the use of psychotropic medications, the impact of medical comorbidity on the course of mood disorders, and the effect of glucose homeostasis on neurocognition.

Dr. McIntyre is extensively involved in medical education. He is a highly sought-after speaker at both national and international meetings. He has received several teaching awards from the University of Toronto, Department of Psychiatry and has been a recipient of the joint Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA) / Council of Psychiatric Continuing Education Award for the Most Outstanding Continuing Education Activity in Psychiatry in Canada.

Dr. McIntyre is a contributor to the CPA guidelines for the treatment of depressive disorders and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) guidelines for the management of bipolar disorder. Dr. McIntyre has published extensively in leading peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Dr. McIntyre is also a reviewer for many journals including the American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry and The New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. McIntyre completed his medical degree at Dalhousie University. He received his Psychiatry residency training and Fellowship in Psychiatric Pharmacology at the University of Toronto.

Dr Shaila Misri

Dr Shaila Misri

Dr. Misri is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry & Obstetrics/Gynecology at the University of British Columbia and the Medical Director of the Reproductive Mental Health Program at BC Women's/St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. She completed over 20 research projects in the past 5 years on mood disorders during premenstrual, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause phases of the female life cycle, and gave over 300 presentations for Grand Rounds, seminars, and courses. Dr. Misri publishes extensively in scientific journals, has written two books, including "Pregnancy Blues" (2005); "Shouldn't I Be Happy?" (1995), and appears regularly on radio/ television shows throughout North America.

Dr Robert Post

Dr Robert Post

Dr. Post graduated from Yale University in 1964, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1968, and interned at the Einstein School of Medicine in 1969. His Psychiatry residency was completed at the Massachusetts General Hospital, NIMH, and George Washington University. He was Chief, Biological Psychiatry Branch for most of his 37 years at the NIMH. He focused on better understanding and treating patients with refractory unipolar and bipolar illness with anticonvulsants, and recently, repeated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). His group has won major research awards from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, APA, ACNP, Anna Monika Foundation, NARSAD, and NDMDA. He is on multiple editorial boards and has published more than 900 manuscripts. He organized the Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network (1995-2002), which now continues as the Bipolar Collaborative Network. He is a member of the APA Committee on Prevention of Childhood Mental Illness.

Adriane Ribeiro Rosa is graduate in Pharmacy & Biochemistry, PhD in Medical Science by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil and Master in Pharmacology by the Federal Foundation of Medical Science of Porto Alegre/Brazil. She currently works as a researcher in the Barcelona Bipolar Disorders Program (Hospital Clínic, University of Barcelona). She has published more than 25 articles in international journals on the psychosocial functioning, treatment adherence, neutotrophins and pharmacological issues in bipolar disorder. At present, she is working in a follow-up study about functional impairment in bipolar disorder. She also collaborates with the Hospital Clínico de Porto Alegre/Brazil in ongoing research projects.

Dr Martha Sajatovic

Dr Martha Sajatovic

Dr. Sajatovic is Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She is a researcher, educator and clinician who has devoted herself to the study and treatment of traditionally hard-to treat populations with serious mental illness. Dr. Sajatovic is currently a clinical researcher and director of Geropsychiatry at University Hospitals of Cleveland. Most recently Dr. Sajatovic has been named Director of the Neurological Outcomes Center (NOC) at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Sajatovic's research interests have focused on illness outcomes in serious mental illness such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. She also has research interests in the psychopharmacology of psychosis and serious mood disorders, and in mental health rating scales. Over the last two decades, Dr. Sajatovic has been the recipient of multiple research grants to study serious mental illness including support from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH), the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), a variety of Mental Health Foundations, and Industry Sponsored clinical trials.

Dr. Sajatovic has published widely on treatments and health services delivery among individuals with serious mental illness including geriatric and mixed-age individuals with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder as well as in the area of treatment adherence in bipolar disorder. She has authored or co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and has published over 30 book chapters or books on serious mental illness topics.

Dr. Sajatovic has been a guest lecturer at numerous academic and community settings, both on a national and international level, including speaking to consumer and family advocacy groups for individuals with psychiatric illness. Dr. Sajatovic has been a recipient of the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award bestowed by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), and was a Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) 2006 Gerald Klerman Young Investigator Award winner.

A psychiatrist by training, Dr. Schulze has been engaged in psychiatric genetics since 1997, focusing on genotype-phenotype relationships. He has held several positions in Germany and the USA and is currently serving as the Assistant Director of Clinical Research at the Unit on the Genetic Basis of Mood and Anxiety Disorders of the NIMH. He is on the Faculty of Johns Hopkins University as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, has authored over 100 articles and is the recipient of several awards. To study the genetics of lithium response in bipolar disorder, he recently organized the Consortium on Lithium Genetics.

Trisha Suppes, M.D., Ph.D. joined the faculty of Stanford University and the VA Palo Alto as Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in 2008, following more than fifteen years at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Her areas of expertise and research include long-term treatment strategies for bipolar disorder, treatment for bipolar II disorder, development and implementation of treatment algorithms, treatment of bipolar depression and use of complementary medicine for bipolar disorder. A 1987 graduate of Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Suppes is a member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Work Group for the Practice Guidelines for Bipolar Disorder and the Mood Disorder Workgroup for the development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, version V. Additionally, Dr. Suppes is an associate editor for the American Journal of Psychiatry and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. She has authored or co-authored over 170 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr Mauricio Tohen

Mauricio Tohen, M.D. DrPH, MBA graduated as a doctor of medicine from the National University of Mexico and as a doctor of public health (epidemiology) from Harvard University. His postdoctoral training included a residency in psychiatry at the University of Toronto and a fellowship at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He also obtained an MBA degree from Indiana University Kelly School of Business.

From 1988 to 1997, he was clinical director of the Bipolar and Psychotic Disorder Program at McLean Hospital. From 1997 to 2008 he worked at Lilly Research Laboratories attaining the highest possible scientific level of Distinguished Lilly Scholar. In 2009 he joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as Head of the Division of Mood and Anxiety Disorders and the Aaron and Bobbie Eliott Krus Endowed Professor in Psychiatry

He received a National Service Award in Psychiatric Epidemiology from NIMH and Harvard University. He also received a FIRST award from NIMH, the Pope Award from McLean Hospital, and a NARSAD Young Investigator Award.

Dr. Tohen's research, supported by grants from NIMH and the pharmaceutical industry, has focused on the epidemiology, outcome, and treatment of bipolar disorder.

He has served on the Council on Research and the committee on Health Services Research of the American Psychiatric Association. He has also served in the Epidemiology & Genetics and the Clinical Centers and Special Projects Review committees at NIMH. Dr. Tohen has over 200 publications. He has co-edited four books, Psychiatric Epidemiology (1995, second edition 2003), Mood Disorders Across the Life Span (1996) ). Bipolar Disorder: The Upswing In Research and Treatment (2005) and Bipolar Psychopharmacotherapy (2006). He also edited the book Comorbidity in Affective Disorders (1999).

Carla Torrent is Clinical Psychologist, Doctor Cum Laude in Psychology, Master in Clinical Practice in Mental Health by the University of Barcelona (Spain) and she performed a postgraduate work in clinical neuropsychology and in clinical psychopharmacology at the University of Barcelona.
She is working as a researcher in the Barcelona Bipolar Disorders Program (Hospital Clínic, University of Barcelona) since 2001.
She has lectured and published several book chapters and more than 35 articles in international journals on the subject of eating behavior, neuropsychological issues, treatment adherence and psychological interventions with regard to bipolar disorders. She also served as referee in different journals.

Dr Eduard Vieta

Eduard Vieta is Professor of Psychiatry and the Director of the Bipolar Disorders Programme of the Hospital Clinic at the University of Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. This programme uniquely combines clinical care, research, and education on bipolar disorder. Dr. Vieta's research focuses on the neurobiology and treatment of bipolar disorder. His programme examines novel pharmacological and psychological treatments, including atypical antipsychotics, antiepileptic drugs, and psychoeducation. Since 2001 his research has been funded by the Stanley Research Medical Institute (Bethesda, USA) and he is the current Director of the Bipolar Research Program at the Spanish Center of Biomedical Research Network on Mental Health (CIBERSAM), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. He has made significant contributions to many of the published bipolar disorder treatment guidelines, and has authored more than 300 original articles, 100 book chapters and 26 complete books, including the recently published 2nd Edition of Bipolar Disorder in Clinical Practice (Current Medicine Group, 2009). He sits on the editorial board of 23 international scientific journals, including The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, Bipolar Disorders, Psychotherapy Psychosomatics, European Neuropsychopharmacology, the Journal of Affective Disorders, and Psychopathology, and he reviews articles for more than 40 others. He has received several awards, including the Aristotle award and the Mogens Schou Award for excellence in bipolar disorder research.

Dr Lakshmi Yatham

Lakshmi N. Yatham, MBBS, FRCPC, MRCPsych (UK), is Professor of Psychiatry and Vice Chair for Research and International Affairs in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. His major areas of research interest include neurobiology and treatment of bipolar disorder and major depression. Dr. Yatham has received a number of awards during his career including the Michael Smith Foundation Senior Scholar Award, Mogen Schou Award for international education and advocacy on bipolar disorder and the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology Medal for his contributions. Dr. Yatham's work has been funded by a number of peer-reviewed funding agencies such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation, Stanley Foundation, and National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, USA. Dr. Yatham leads a Canadian consortium on bipolar disorder, which is currently pursuing testing of new treatments for bipolar disorder using pragmatic and controlled trials with substantial funding from CIHR.

Dr. Yatham co-led the development of Canadian guidelines for treatment of bipolar disorder in 1997 and his group revised the guidelines for 2005 with International Commentaries. The CANMAT guidelines are widely used for treatment of bipolar disorder around the world as these are updated and published every 2 years in Bipolar Disorders Journal with the most recent update published in May 2009. He is Chair of the bipolar group of the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT), and is actively involved at a national and international level in continuing medical education and public education on diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder for psychiatrists, family physicians, and the general public. Dr. Yatham was the past President of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders. He sits on the editorial boards of a number of journals including Bipolar Disorders, Brain Pharmacology, Human Psychopharmacology, Quarterly Journal of Mental Health etc. He has published over 170 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and presented his research work at numerous international conferences.

Dr L. Trevor Young

As an active clinician scientist in the area of bipolar disorder, Dr. Young's principal research interest includes understanding the molecular basis of bipolar disorder and its treatment, and how to apply these findings to the clinical setting. He is widely published and well funded by peer-reviewed granting agencies in these areas. His research is particularly focused on understanding the processes that lead to long-term changes in brain structure and function in patients with bipolar disorder and how these changes can be targeted by the neuroprotective effects of mood stabilizing drugs.

Dr. Young has led several large clinical programs for patients with mood disorders including the Mood Disorders Program at Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, which received the American Psychiatric Services Gold Achievement Award. In 2003, he was awarded the Douglas Utting Award for outstanding contributions in the field of mood disorders. In 2006, he was appointed a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and received
the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology Heinz Lehmann Award for outstanding contributions in the field of research in neuropsychopharmacology in Canada. In 2009, he was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, one of the highest honours for members of the health sciences community in Canada.

Dr. Young received his medical degree at the University of Manitoba. This was followed by residency training at McGill University and the University of Toronto where he also completed his PhD in Medical Sciences. He completed a Research Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. His former roles include Physician-in-Chief, Executive Vice President Programs at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and Professor and Cameron Wilson Chair in Depression Studies in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
